The Indian Premier League has been a land of breathtaking cricket, and over the years putting catching, diving around for saves and creating wickets in front of outside or opening up an extra wedge have become some of its biggest draws. For every one handed screamer, leaping catch in front of the boundary line or relay catch that you see in social media highlights, there are some of the fastest athletes alive doing their thing. However, beyond this spin and such spectacular moments is a worrying possibility, that the basics of fielding in IPL 2026 may not be any better.
As a recent Cricbuzz analysis put it, the league finds itself in the middle of one bizarre contradiction. However players are looking more athletic and dynamic than ever before, yet some key fielding indicators both traditional measures of catching efficiency and misfields, as well as 21st century stats like FP% confirm that the foundation of good fielding is getting dressed up with fewer bricks. Over the last three seasons of the IPL, teams have averaged less than 80 percent in catching efficiency and misfields per game have almost doubled over the last two years.
This is unexpected as you have multiple departments involved in sports science, data analysis and specialized coaches for all the roles in modern cricket. Almost every aspect of the game batting strike rates, bowling variations, fitness levels has changed in 2023. Nevertheless, Fielding appears to have reached a bizarre patch of stasis.
Mumbai Indians former fielding coach James Pamment feels athleticism is not the issue but preparation. He states that a lot of players spend much more time in practice on batting and bowling than redundant fielding drills that simulate match conditions. Some players practice fielding for hardly a few minutes in the IPL training sessions Aakash Chopra. He also cautioned about teams focusing too much on highlight-reel catches that play well on social media but rarely happen in a game.
IPL 2026 supports the worry with figures. Kolkata Knight Riders did feature among the good fielding sides in terms of catching efficiency with an 84.5 per cent catch success rate[7], but on the other hand, Delhi Capitals were one of the more disappointing sides with a meagre catch success rate of 67.1 percent! This is why every training session is planned at simulating match conditions, be it a wet ball or reverse-swing situation, high catches under pressure or venue-specific factors such as the thinner air in Dharamsala. Players normally field when they are physically tired, replicating the requirement of a long T20 game.
Rinku Singh has epitomised it. He had taken three catches from the boundary in KKR’s tied match against Lucknow Super Giants along with another one in the Super Over. No, his success is not a function of sheer luck or flair; it has roots in endurance, positioning, and consistent conditioning even when fatigued.
But Pamment argues that the bigger problem he identified still stands. He considers today’s cricketers, without question, to be better athletes than players from ten years ago but contended: ‘Just because movement is better, it does not follow that the basics of the game are now automatically better’. Therein lies the danger, that this game glorifies remarkable moments while ignoring all of the mundane errors which too often decide matches.
Even in T20 cricket, a dropped sitter can hurt more than a failed acrobatic chance. A single misfield cost a dot ball a boundary, and single dropped catch costs an entire season. If the IPL is getting bigger, fatter and richer, it is not working against fielding, it is working for it.
What IPL 2026 has taught us is simple. Flashy catches will elicit [oohs and aahs], but titles are usually won with clean pickups, quality catches, accurate throws and disciplined positioning. The challenge for franchises though is to bridge the gap between brilliant and reliable. In the meantime, till that happens, there will be as much brilliance in modern day T20 cricket showcased by IPL as also its vulnerability.
